Born to an American father and a Russian-Armenian mother, Albert Newberry is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance at Mannes School of Music in NYC under the tutelage of Irina Morozova. He also takes jazz courses at The New School and studies jazz piano with Dan Tepfer. While in high school, Albert recorded a jazz album, From the Sublime to the Ridiculous, collaborating with a drummer and a saxophonist. Nine out of the eleven tracks are his original compositions; the last two are his arrangements of the popular Russian and American folk songs. Albert won the 2013 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award, first place in the 2014 Intersection of Jazz and Classical Music Piano Festival and Competition at UWV, the 2015 Rebecca Orr Scholarship, the Downbeat Magazine 2017 Outstanding Performance Award, and the 2017-2018/2019 AGBU Performing Arts Scholarship. Albert has participated in numerous summer festivals around the country and abroad and had the privilege of working closely with such renowned musicians as Peter Serkin, John Salmon, Hayk Arsenayn, Alexander Braginsky, Svetlana Navassardian, Bobby Sanabria, Dave Douglas, and Ran Blake. He has performed in many prestigious venues,including NEC’s Jordan Hall and Carnegie Hall.
